Art History Newsletter : Snapped Shut

arthistorynewsletter.com - Liam Considine
The term “snapshot” predates the invention of photography. From 1808, the term has meant “a quick or hurried shot taken without deliberate aim, esp. one at a rising bird or quickly moving animal.” It is strange to think that this hunting term for a spontaneous and haphazard reaction would ever be associated with the Nabis – those “prophets” of Modernism gathered around Maurice Denis’ assertion that a picture is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order. Neverth…  »

Smoke and Mirrors: Bernini’s Ecstasy of St Teresa « Understanding Rome

In February I wrote a couple of posts about the church of the Gesù, and how the Baroque made bombastic use of dramatic “special effects” to wow the faithful (here and here). In the 1600s art was one of the many tools used in drawing them ever closer to the Roman church, and away from the troublesome Protestants who continued to seek to underminine the Pope’s cause in Northern Europe. The undoubted star of the Roman Baroque, and perhaps the mastermind behind Il Baccicia’s ceiling at the Gesù, was  »

Reconsidering Grant Wood’s Revolt…

[Editor's Note: As I am facing numerous writing deadlines over the second half of February, this seems like a good time to give a retrospective glance to the first two years of Art of the Rural. Over these weeks I will feature a few new articles, but also many favorites from the archives. Thanks again to everyone who has read and contributed; what began as a labor of love has become a project far larger, and far more rewarding, than I ever could have anticipated - and I deeply appreciate the re...

Facial recognition to be used in art history research

arstechnica.com - Cyrus Farivar
So you’ve heard of facial recognition used in user interfaces, on Facebook, and even as a law enforcement tool. But how about using it to identify 15th century works of art? Three University of California, Riverside academics recently won a $25,000 startup grant in the "digital humanities" from the National Endowment for the Humanities. They’ll use the money for a research project that would use facial recognition technology in areas that it historically hasn’t been used in. "What we want to do…  »

Darshana Jayemanne is an Australian graduate student at Melbourne’s School of Culture and Communication. On April 24th, 2012, Darshana Jayemanne posted an insightful Kill Screen piece that draws on the history of non-linear art to refute recent attacks on today’s non-linear forms, most notably video games. A History of Roman Art, Enhanced Edition Review | Built In Entertainment Center

Average Reviews: (More customer reviews)I use this book as the primary text in my class on Roman Art and Archaeology. While it has largely an Art Historical bent, it is still the best, most comprehensive book that is currently available (I switch from Strong’s Roman Art that pre-dates this text by a few decades). The illustrations and images are beautiful, it has snippets of history and text to provide good context, and is organized in a nice, chronological fashion. I would highly recommend it  »

Another sculpture that has been idling in a museum for ages is getting new attention all of a sudden. Egyptologist Giuseppina Capriotti of the Italian National Research Council believes a statue in the Cairo Museum depicts the twin children of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene. The sandstone statue was discovered near the temple of Hathor in Dendera on the west bank of the Nile in 1918. Cleopatra VII is known to have commissioned works in that temple, most famously  »
